8 Famous Cannabis Advocates

One of the benefits of cannabis moving into the mainstream is the reimagining of what it means to be a cannabis user. In fact, many successful people are open about their experiences with cannabis products, busting the myth of the ineffective stoner. Here is a list of some famous folks who have been open about their support of cannabis legalization. 

Bill Gates

Bill Gates is known to be one of the most successful and affluent businessmen in America. He is also a well-known philanthropist and is not afraid to vocalize his support of certain legislative matters. He publicly supported the 2012 referendum to legalize cannabis in Washington state. In a biography about Gates author Stephen Manes wrote, “As for drugs – well, Gates was certainly not unusual there. Marijuana was the pharmaceutical of choice.” 

Stephen King

Famous horror author and filmmaker Stephen King has been open about his use of cannabis and his beliefs about the legalization of marijuana. King has previously stated, “I think that marijuana should not only be legal, I think it should be a cottage industry. It would be wonderful for the state of Maine.”

Snoop Dogg

A list of influential cannabis users would not be complete with not be complete without the O.G cannabis enthusiast Snoop Dogg. He has been vocal about his love for marijuana since the earliest days of his career. Snoop has been also been growing as a cannabis industry pioneer with his own venture into the emerging legal cannabis industry. He has his own line of cannabis strains and vape pens and runs a cannabis culture website called Merry Jane.

Martha Stewart

Following Snoop, we have his unconventional buddy Martha Stewart. While the two may seem like unlikely friends, Stewart and Dogg have bonded. Stewart is probably more well-known for her TV cooking shows and houseware lines. She has also been opening up about using CBD products to relieve pain in her tendon muscles. She has been so moved by these non-psychoactive cannabis products that she has partnered with a company to launch her line of CBD-infused products. They’re even pet-friendly!

Whoopi Goldberg

Award-winning actress and talk show host Whoopi Goldberg has publicly discussed how marijuana has helped her maintain her health. She has publicly discussed using vape pens, saying that she uses them to get relief from “pressure, pain, stress, discomfort.” Goldberg has previously launched a line of cannabis products designed specifically for menstrual pain relief. 

Morgan Freeman

Actor Morgan Freeman has also been quoted talking about his use of marijuana for pain relief. The Driving award-winning star once said, “My first wife got me into it many years ago. I have fibromyalgia pain in this arm, and the only thing that offers any relief is marijuana.”

Seth Rogen

Seth Rogan is a pioneer of millennial-era stoner comedy. He has starred in some classic weed-themed films, such as Pineapple Express.  He is a frequent vocal supporter of the legalization and use of all types of cannabis products. He has a non-profit organization called Hilarity For Charity, dedicated to raising awareness about a CBD program that supports patients with Alzheimer’s. 

Mike Tyson

One of the most legendary boxers in the world, Mike Tyson is also emerging as a cannabis industry leader. He is a vocal advocate of CBD and THC products and has his cannabis brand, Tyson 2.0. He has a ranch that cultivates cannabis for his CBD products and has partnered with premium cannabis brands. Tyson said his collaborations cater to “a broad set of individuals and meet the cannabis consumption methods they seek.”


While cannabis legalization has come a long way in the last few decades, we still have a long road ahead of us. It’s important that we have big names being so public about their stance to help put pressure toward federal legalization.
